check out lead single ‘Realise The Reality’ –

Barbudo Pleasures Disco Ball text-min

Barbudo are a ‘Nu-eyed Soul’ group from the south coast town of Havant, Portsmouth. Their sound combines mellow RnB tones with funky hooks, providing a sensual underwater sensation for live shows. Their songs are instantly memorable and engaging, helped by the band’s laid back disco feel and knack for intricate and soulful melodies. Brothers Ben and Harry write and record the music and are joined by a full band for shows.

“Pleasures” is an assured step in a new direction for Barbudo. The EP sees the band transition from psyche pop into a “Nu-eyed Soul” style; a self-appointed tagline that perfectly captures the mood of the EP. “Pleasures” combines elements of funk, soul and disco with charming synth sounds and infectious soulful melodies. The R’n’B feel of the tracks is complimented by lush harmonies and delicate keyboard tones, providing a fresh spin on classic ideals.  As usual, Barbudo have meticulously crafted the tracks in their home studio with the use of analogue equipment. This time, their efforts have produced a cosy, well-developed and exciting home-produced EP that invites listeners on a playful journey to an alchemy of familiar and new sounds.

The band’s second EP, ‘Pleasures’, released on the 8th September by Pie&Vinyl Records.

To celebrate the release, the band will play two shows on Saturday 9th September at the Staggeringly Good Brewery, Portsmouth. More info on the Portsmouth show *HERE* the second in London will be announced soon.

The band has a host of upcoming shows to celebrate the release, which are as follows:

More about the bands…

Bristol’s finest post-punk polemics IDLES have been promising to do great things for some time now, and with their debut album “Brutalism” they absolutely fulfil that promise, and a furious promise at that.

Politically charged, refreshingly confrontational and infectiously volatile, IDLES are a band like no other. Bringing the unsettling reality of the world we live in into their frantic assault on the senses, they are a band that until now could only be truly understood by witnessing in a live environment – but with “Brutalism” it surely feels like they have captured the intensity of that live sound. Bottled up here are the abrasive, memorable lyrics of Joseph Talbot delivered with all of the spite and wry humour he puts across on the stage.

Is Bliss

The Highly promising Portsmouth band, Comprising of Jimmy Stuart (vox, guitar), Dean Edwards (bass) and Sam Speakman (drums), Is Bliss have quickly gained attention opening for Wolf Alice, Telescopes, Nine Black Alps, Mark Gardener and Robin Guthrie.

The guys have landed the support slot to the mighty ‘The Jesus and Mary Chain’ on their up coming arena tour, and are set to become a very big deal indeed.

The Magic Gang

The Magic Gang kick-started the year with the brand new single ‘How Can I Compete?’. The single is the first release on Yala! Records, the new label / club night which was co-founded by Felix White of The Maccabees.

Premiered as the Hottest Record in the World on Radio 1 and currently Huw Stephens’ Record of the Week, ‘How Can I Compete’ is a shot of sunshine in these gloomy months as The Magic Gang deliver a spirited concoction of shimmering melody, bold pop choruses and swooning vocal harmonies. The track was produced by The Maccabees’ Hugo White and was recorded at London studio The Drugstore, famously once home to The Jesus & Mary Chain.

EP Three 12” vinyl which features ‘How Can I Compete’ will be available exclusively on RSD, a week before release. GRAB ONE.

Plastic Mermaids

One of the most popular acts that played last year (We didn’t stop taking questions about them for months afterwards) are back! Hailing from our Island twin, the Isle Of Wight – the guys are set to embark on a UK tour, and release their first album this year.

Sure to be super massive, catch them while you can – MarC Riley Loves them, need I say more.

Emily Barker

Emily Barker’s new album was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis with Grammy-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price) and an all-star cast of Memphis session players. Sweet Kind of Blue will be released through Everyone Sang/Kartel on 19th May – it is her first full studio album since 2013’s critically lauded Dear River and marks a new sound for Barker as she returns to the soul and blues influences that first inspired her to become a songwriter and musician.

Emily Barker is best known as the writer and performer of the award-winning theme to BBC crime drama Wallander starring Kenneth Branagh. She has released music as a solo artist as well as with various bands including The Red Clay Halo, Vena Portae and Applewood Road. In 2015 she composed her first full feature film soundtrack for Jake Gavin’s Hector, which won a Scottish BAFTA for its lead actor, Peter Mullan.

“Blues meets country meets gospel… a sweet and tender distillation of Americana influences” Clash

“Emily Barker has a gift for great melodies” The Guardian

Highlight Of Our Modern World (Pie&Vinyl Records)

I guess HOMW started with a similar solo project (Shipton), which started to naturally grow into something a bit more electronic, but I wanted to quit the singing and neo-folk influences and get back to my roots in ambient/progressive soundscapes. I thought I’d start where I naturally feel most comfortable; with the guitar, so the first release was purely raw guitar loops with some very minimal evolving synth breaths. With each release I have tried to push myself a little more with self-production and electronic writing, trying things here and there and learning as I go. For my next record I am looking to really see how far I can take myself, not only in terms of track structures but also in a live performance environment. I want to produce music that tells a story, without having to use words, something immersive without complexities. I have always enjoyed the subtleties of ambient and post-rock artists. Mathematic song structures and crazy time signatures are great and I can’t argue that watching someones hands scramble up and down a fretboard like panicked insects, or an electronic artist sporadically pushing buttons and twisting things is something mind-blowing to watch, what really grabs my attention is an artists fine-tuning. The attention to detail of minimalist composers reminds me of an artist or designer’s obsessive tweaking to make sure the final piece is exactly how it should be, before being consumed by the audience. I suppose this is my self-briefed goal

Play Dead Collective Street Jam

Some of the area’s best street artists collaborating, and making art all day long before your eyes…they’ll also be there with their ridiculously good merch selection.

Still in their teenage years, and recently free of school, Blaenavon are three boys who have taken the music world by storm.  Having played with the likes of Foals, Bloc Party and Warpaint to name a few, the band have released two EPs on Transgressive Records and have recently completed their debut album, with singer Ben Gregory starring in Burberry’s New Faces campaign.

Having released previous singles ‘Into The Night’ and ‘Denim Patches’ on Transgressive imprint paradYse, Blaenavon followed up with debut EP Koso in September 2013, through Transgressive Records. The four-track offering encompasses everything good about a young band with a very bright future, flowing seamlessly from delicately picked verses to euphoric sections of soaring vocals and powerful guitars.

Plus vinyl only DJ in between bands – WAX EQUITIES https://www.facebook.com/WAXEQUITIES/

Record Store Day 2017 at Pie&Vinyl – Rules & Tips for Fun Times – Please Read

For those who are new to Record Store Day, and a recap for those who treat the annual celebration as a type of Birthday/Christmas/Wedding Day all rolled in to one…please find some very important information on how we will roll on the big day.

Ok, we’ve called them rules but please see them as positives gestures, for everyone to have a really great Record Store day! Read on for a few tips also…

RSD RULES (Positive Gestures)

  • We will open our doors on the big day at 8am sharp. People are welcome to queue in an orderly fashion from approx. a week before then. We will close at 7pm.

  • First come first served. We really mean it. We adhere to RSD and ERA rulings, which state that we can’t reserve anything for anyone (Including animals and robots). Damn right too! What kind of cherished event would RECORD STORE DAY be if people could reserve records? You need to earn that LIMITED must have…this isn’t downloading, it doesn’t come easy but the rewards are totally worth it and you will feel like a champion! You can however request what you are after, which will help us order the correct amount of stock. Just email [email protected] – with your requests.

  • ONE COPY OF EACH OFFICIAL RSD RELEASE PER CUSTOMER. You can buy as many records as your bank manager allows, but please don’t try and purchase two or more of the same thing, as we will not sell them to you. This will mean everyone will have a chance to get what they want. From Sunday (the day after) The rules will be relaxed, any stock left and in any quantity will be up for grabs.

  •  We’ll be letting approx. 25 people in to the store at a time. Although we are larger, we have to respect the people who have queued for hours and give them a fair crack at purchasing what they have nearly died for. We are a larger beast these days, but still small and perfectly formed. We don’t want to see any crushes/fist fights/passion for music being compromised. We will play it by ear as the day goes on, and as soon as we feel it is safe to let more punters in, we shall do. By putting the above rules into place, this will mean that everyone should be able to purchase at least something they desire at any point during the day.

Don’t be put off if you don’t fancy standing in a queue. This is why we employ the rules above, so that everyone gets a fair crack at buying what they want:) Many people were still finding bits they wanted at mid day/early afternoon last year. We want to make this as fair as possible, and look after you regular customers as well as welcoming new ones.

There may be quite a few late additions, or titles you have heard are being released but not on the RSD list.

Rest assured, if it’s an official RSD UK release, we will have a chance to stock it.

We are confident that we will receive large amounts of stock, and certainly as much as we are allowed to lay our furry paws on. But do remember, that some of these items are super limited (in some cases only 150 items for the whole country) so depending on total quantity available, we will get as much as we are sent.

To request any title – please e mail [email protected]

See HERE for release list and P&V prices.

The first customers on the big day have usually earned the right, by queuing for quite some time. If there is something you really, really want – Plan to get there really, really early.

This may sound funny, but you get to meet some really like minded souls, standing in line. There was a really special atmosphere and team spirit last year…and when that door opens, you won’t have felt excitement quite like it! Friends for life and a triumphant atmosphere all round!

Bring plenty of cash – there will be a cash only till in action on the day to help serve you as swiftly as possible. It will also be handy for purchasing a few drinks and some hot food for those queuing.

Make sure you get to enjoy the street market and our incredible outdoor stage – more information HERE (announced soon)

Keep up to date by visiting and ‘liking’ our social pages, and sign up to our mailing list to be the first to know stuff.

Pies and drinks

With all this no sleep, queuing lark – Rest assured, we want you fighting fit when you finally get to touch those promised pieces of shellac. You need to eat, to be strong to face the final hurdle…a Bowie 7’’ or the complete Vengaboys collection? We can’t have you going hungry now…

We’ll be looking after you early birds and making sure you are comfortable and offering pies and drinks for you to consume while you wait.

Our kitchen team will be taking orders from the queue and we’ll be offering free Pie&Vinyl TEA and coffee to warm you up and keep you alert. We’ll be out there early…from about 6am ish. You may even be served by ‘Piedi’ our pie mascot:)

Food and drinks will also be served throughout the day from our outside pie pop up stall, and (look out for some delicious music related pie specials)

Also, we’d like to welcome our RSD ambassadors this year St. Vincent. E mail us any messages you have for Annie, and we’ll pass them on.

Lots of Love, the P&V Referee x
